Hit the Snooze Button on False Alarms

Avoid problems from unmonitored data or false alarms in your data center.

What wakes your team up at night? Another false alarm like Gary just experienced in the comic above? How would you like to put an end to simplistic, availability -based alarms across siloed tools and reduce the number of sleepless nights for your team?

We all know that many of the alarms which Kip and Gary experience are false positives. Your teams are wasting precious time chasing down these alarms because they have to track down every single one of them, across multiple disconnected tools and then verify if it was real or false. While they’re doing that, there’s a good chance that they’ll miss another alarm that they should have been paying more attention to. Here’s a few real life benefits our customers have achieved by adopting a unified, proactive alerting approach to infrastructure monitoring, data center infrastructure management (DCIM) and capacity planning:

• A social media company was having issues with poorly monitored Building Management Systems (BMS) and overly-simplistic BMS alarm technology keeping them awake at night resolving issues that should have been detected previously. With the addition of CA DCIM, they were able to improve the monitoring of their systems and avoid undetected problems from unmonitored data or false positives due to inadequate BMS alert functionality.

• The Technology Services Manager at a Managed Service Provider stated that “On average we reduced the number of false alarms by up to 75% after implementing a unified and proactive IT monitoring approach for our customers.”

• An IT Specialist at a State & Local Government organization is using capacity management to provide “a view of how servers are performing and insight into potential resource problems.”

• David Brown, CEO of Datotel said that, “DCIM has really has enabled us to chase what’s important to us and remove most of the other noise.”

By redefining your IT infrastructure management strategy, you can start to suppress false alarms by incorporating a more intelligent alerting approach. Look for solutions that offer a patented alerting algorithms that give you more sophisticated alerts than the typical “over a threshold” alert. Alerts are compressed, so multiple alerts are shown as one alert occurring multiple times. These smart alerts are typically integrated with a unified monitoring, ticketing or incident management system, so not only are events correlated with an event, but typically an event is opened with a specific action that is assigned to an IT services person.

While capacity planning is not designed for today’s monitoring needs, it sure plays a pivotal role in your management needs for tomorrow. Predictive insight into existing infrastructure utilization, current bottlenecks and the future capacity needs of your critical business services undoubtedly will reduce false alarms in the future. Look for solutions that offer intelligent workload growth modeling and automated optimization recommendations that provided instant insight into the right-sizing of your current infrastructure for cost savings and resiliency planning as well as workload growth exercises to understand exactly when the supportive infrastructure will impact the customer experience.

In today’s data-driven world, your IT and facilities teams need to have a holistic view of all their infrastructure elements to support and deliver business critical applications. A comprehensive unified approach and solution will ensure that everyone is looking at the same version of the truth.

What other challenges do you need to overcome in terms of your IT infrastructure management? Take a look at this entertaining CA-sponsored comic series in which Kip & Gary highlight some of the challenges IT and facilities teams face every day. Which one’s your favorite? Cast your vote. Have they convinced you to redefine your infrastructure management approach?
